God's love is steadfast, unwavering. It never spikes upward or plunges downward as we please Him or displease Him. The same steadfast love will chasten us at times, but it is precisely because of its steadfastness that it does not annihilate us and our sins in one mighty swish of the blade of justice and judgment. But love is patient and kind (1 Cor. 13.4) and never gives up on us – if we maintain our faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 3.28;5.1; Gal. 3.24).
Although I do not subscribe to the belief in unconditional eternal security, I can understand why a goodly number of believers do. The love of God is like the love a woman has for her unfaithful, alcoholic, abusive husband. She loves the scoundrel and will forgive him time and time again whenever he comes crawling to her with his tearful apologies and promises never to 1) get in bed again with another woman, 2) drink again, or 3) hit her again. She always hopes for the best and accepts him back into her loving arms and her home. (I must admit that if I were a woman I could not go beyond the first one or two times that he broke his vow. After that the no-account would be on his own, outside of my home and my love. But of course God may always intervene and tell a misused woman to go another mile; and who can argue with God?
Like the love of the poor woman who has been mistreated by her husband (or, rather, her love is like God's), God always hopes to bring the best out of us despite our sins. And only God can do this; His Spirit can make us over. He alone can change a sow's ear into a silk purse, whereas the woman with the unfaithful, alcoholic, abusive spouse cannot change him. She can only pray that her mate will let God make the change in his nature – and if he does, the change will be dramatic and miraculous.
Without God we, all men, are doomed sinners. His love for us makes an infinity of difference between what we were and what he transforms us into being. We are now children of the light; we are saints of God, holy, uncondemned, perfect – as long as we trust in the righteousness of Christ.
This same love we bask in can transform the meanest, vilest life into a thing of utter beauty. We who believe can witness to God's transforming power (the New Birth) because He changed us completely around. He can do the same for you no matter how vile and despicable you see yourself. You are indeed vile and despicable; we all were at one time until the Man Jesus Christ came into our lives with His power to change human nature into the nature of God. Come to Jesus now by confessing and turning your back on your sins, throwing yourself on God's mercy and crying out, "Lord, save me!" In love He cannot refuse you.
